Description
A view of the huge rock at the site of El Fuerte ("The Fort") near the village of Samaipata in Santa Cruz Department in eastern Bolivia. Although called a fort, Samaipata had also religious, ceremonial, and residential functions. The site is in the foothills of the Bolivian Andes and construction was probably begun by the Chane (a pre-Inca people from the lowlands). It was later occupied by the Incas and was the easternmost administrative centre of the Inca Empire.
