Description
Detail of the entrance of one of the unique coloured or polychromatic burial towers or chulpas (chullpas) found in the Lauca river valley in the far west of Bolivia not far from the Chile border. They are thought to have been built between 1200-1300AD by the Carangas culture for dead chiefs and rulers (whose bodies would have probably been mummified) of the various tribes that inhabited the region at that time. Some have been restored with assistance from the World Monuments Fund. The colours are not painted onto the surface but the result of either using different coloured soils or mixing in mineral pigments into the mud bricks when they were made.
