Description
These fantastic and bizarre roots belong to a European or common beech tree (Fagus sylvatica). This shot was taken on Rusthall Common near Tunbridge Wells in Kent, southeast England. This part of the Weald of Kent is noted for its sandstone rock outcrops as well as its woodlands. This ancient tree's root system had spread over and into crevasses and joints in the rock almost like some alien growth, it's amazing what nature can do over time!
