Description
This carved stone face is one of several in the ruins of Bayham Abbey, on the border of Kent and East Sussex between Tunbridge Wells and Lamberhurst in southeast England. The abbey was founded in the early 13th century by Premonstratensian monks and suppressed by Cardinal Wolsey in 1525 to fund two new colleges he planned to build. Most of the abbey was built using the distinctive local yellow Wealden sandstone, a few of these faces have remarkably survived centuries of English weather and erosion....!
