Description
Candles burning at the base of the final cross on the trail to the Sanctuary of the Lord of Qoyllur Riti in the high Andes in Peru's Cusco region. The Qoyllur Riti (which means Snow Star in the Quechua language) festival is one of the largest in Peru. During the event thousands of people make a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary, a church located in a valley at 4700m / approx 15,500ft at the foot of the sacred Sinak'ara mountain. The festival was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List in 2011.
