Description
Arguably England's best known food, fish and chips became popular in the 19th century with the growth of the North Sea fishing industry and the rapid development of the railway network that connected the fishing ports to the country's major towns and cities. It consists of deep fried battered fish (usually cod or haddock though other fish are often used as well) and potato chips / fries served with salt and vinegar. Other accompaniments (whose popularity varies by region) include mushy peas, gravy and curry sauce.
