Description
Random lines and an almost perfect heart shape in the mud of the shallow Laguna Santa Rosa, a saline lake in the Nevado de Tres Cruces National Park in the Puna de Atacama in Chile. These lines have actually been made by flamingos walking around in the soft mud as they feed! The patterns only lasted a short time, winds and currents in the shallow water mean they are always changing or being covered by sediments. The lake is home to a population of Andean flamingos (one of 3 species found in South America) and also part of the Salar de Maricunga (the southernmost salt flat in Chile).
