Description
Flamingos exploring Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni in the rainy season. The Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat, covering 10,582 square km / 4,086 square miles at an altitude of 3656m / 12,000ft. It often floods (to a depth of only a few cm) during the rainy season which turns the surface into a huge mirror reflecting the skies. This can also cause more unusual atmospheric effects and mirages such as hills and distant mountains appearing to float on the horizon.
The flamingos are I think young Chilean flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilensis), the most widespread of the 3 South American flamingo species. Young birds are much grayer than the well known pink adults.
