Description
A small group of 2 of the 3 flamingo species found in the high Andes feeding in a lake in the high altiplano of western Bolivia. This image shows 4 Andean flamingos (Phoenicopterus andinus, above, with the yellow legs) and 2 James's or Puna flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi) below them. Both species are endangered and only found on high altitude saline lakes in western Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina. The James's flamingos are the smallest South American flamingo species and have red legs and more red feathers on the rear of the body. The Andean species has more pink on the lower neck. This shot was taken on a stormy afternoon in the rainy season; the dark grey skies reflected in the water really make the pink colours of the flamingos stand out!
