Description
Flamingos stretch their wings in a lake in the altiplano of western Bolivia. Around half the birds in this shot are Andean flamingos (Phoenicopterus andinus), the rarest of the three flamingo species found in the high Andes and a listed endangered species. They are found on high altitude saline lakes in Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina, and also in southern Peru outside the breeding season. It is the only flamingo that has yellow legs and three toed feet.
In the lower part of the shot are a number of James's or Puna flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi), the other endangered South American flamingo species. They are smaller than the Andean species and have red legs and more deep pink / red feathers on the rear of their bodies. They also have less of the deep pink flush on their necks. The paler individuals are immature or non-breeding birds. This shot was taken on a stormy afternoon in the rainy season; the dark grey skies reflected in the water really make the pink colours of the flamingos stand out!
