Description
Detail of a vase of flowers left as an offering next to a stone cross carved into the wall of a historic colonial building in Cusco, Peru. The stepped base of the cross is actually part of a symbol known as the Chakana or Andean cross, a symbol that has been used since ancient times to represent the Andean vision of the universe. It is often seen in archaeological sites in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador and also as cairns in front of colonial churches in rural areas. The hanging red chili pepper painted on the cross added an unusual touch!
