Description
The Panamanian golden frog (Atelopus zeteki, actually a toad) is endemic to a small part of central Panama and critically endangered. It is quite likely to be extinct in the wild, with the last wild specimens now being kept in captivity for study and a breeding program to ensure their survival. Frog populations in Central America have been badly hit in recent years by a fungal infection called chytridiomycosis, which is partly responsible for their decline. It is a national symbol of Panama.

Thank you all for your comments. Hopefully the breeding programs being carried out will at least ensure their survival and they will be re-introduced to the wild one day.
