Description
A detail of the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore, the first major architectural monument planned to honor George Washington. Designed by the architect Robert Mills, it is 178 feet / 54m high and was completed in 1829. The four sides of the base commemorate important events in Washington's life, such as the dates of his presidency in this image. After restoration the Monument was reopened to the public on 4th July 2015, the bicentenery of the start of its construction and the laying of the cornerstone.
