Description
Segovia is one of Spain's most historic cities, its historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Every year at the end of June the city celebrates Segovia Week, festivals in honour of the city's patron saints San Juan and San Pedro. These festival have been held since the 15th century and consist of fairs, parades and processions. These giants, called gigantes, are a common feature of Spanish festivals, and often depict typical local characters or famous people associated with the town. The heads are made of papier mache and the clothing is hung on a frame; a person inside wears the figure on a special harness. The people wearing oversized heads are called cabezudos ("big heads").
