Description
Lesser celandine flowers (Ficaria verna, formerly Ranunculus ficaria) in an English woodland in early spring. A member of the buttercup family, these beautiful flowers are among the first to appear in spring in the UK and are a common sight in especially damper areas of woodlands, hedgerows and countryside. Native to Europe and western Asia, they have been introduced to North America (where they are known as fig buttercups). They are considered an invasive and noxious weed in some US states as they can be poisonous if eaten raw and potentially fatal to livestock.
