Description
A view of Guallatiri volcano (6071m /19,918ft), one of the most active volcanos in northern Chile. Fumaroles can frequently been seen emitting smoke from near its summit and on the southern flank (where there are several vents), the view in this image. It's last confirmed eruption was in 1960, it seems likely it also erupted in 1985 and there was a notable increase in fumarole activity in 2015 which coincided with a magnitude 6.4 earthquake nearby (the epicentre was approx 7km from the summit). This shot was taken in 2016, fumarole activity was still noticeably higher than on visits before 2015. The rustic church tower is in the nearby Guallatiri village. The region is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981.
