Description
Hastings, on the south coast of England, is home to one of Britain's oldest fishing fleets and the largest beach (as opposed to harbour) based fishing fleet in Europe. The black timber buildings are net shops, unique to Hastings and dating from the early 19th century. They were built to store nets and gear rather than for hanging nets up to dry (they have several floors inside). The tall thin design is because at the time they were built there was very limited space on the shingle beach for buildings.
