Description
Hastings, on the south coast of England, is home to one of Britain's oldest fishing fleets and the largest beach (as opposed to harbour) based fishing fleet in Europe. Boats are hauled up the beach by cables and winches. Here the fisherman is putting down wooden blocks to protect the keel as the boat moves up the beach. In the background is the East Cliff Lift, opened in 1903 and the steepest funicular railway in the United Kingdom.
