Description
A European herring gull (Larus argentatus) perches on the edge of chalk cliffs, with the
Beachy Head lighthouse in the background. The lighthouse is offshore from the headland of the same name in East Sussex, southern England; it entered service in 1902 and was manually operated until 1983. It was built to replace an older clifftop lighthouse at nearby Belle Tout which was often invisible to ships in foggy conditions. Herring gulls are a common large gull on the coasts of Europe, and the commonest of the larger gulls in the UK where they are often a noisy presence and sometimes a nuisance in seaside towns.
