Description
The high altitude volcanic deserts in the far southwest of Bolivia have some of the most barren and surreal scenery I've ever seen. The colorful peak on the right of this image is the Cerro Nelly or Nelli volcano (5676m / 18,620ft). An old sulphur / sulfur mine is located high on its flanks. The desert on the left of the image with scattered rock formations is known locally as the Salvador Dail Desert / Desierto de Salvador Dail from its resemblance to the surreal desert landscapes in some of Dali's paintings. The area is part of the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve (Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Abaroa in Spanish, often referred to locally by its Spanish acronym REA) and on the route of the popular 3 day 4x4 tours between Uyuni and San Pedro de Atacama (in Chile). This panoramic image is in a 5:1 format.
