Description
This fascinating little cemetery along with the mine workings is about all that is left of Milluni, a Bolivian village near La Paz that used to be an important tin mining centre. The mine was abandoned in the 1990s; with the rise in mineral prices it has been partially reopened by a cooperative in the last few years. The cross on the left of the image is a monument dedicated to the many miners killed in clashes with the army in May 1965 during nationwide protests against the military dictatorship that ruled Bolivia at the time. The mountain in the background is Huayna Potosi (6088m / 19,975ft), a popular peak with climbers.
