Description
A basket of gladioli flowers next to the entrance of a typical old colonial courtyard in the small town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley near Cusco, Peru. Ollantaytambo was an important Inca town and is one of the oldest towns that has been continuously inhabited in The Americas. Most of the streets in the historic centre and a lot of the buildings (more than most villages) date from the Inca period. On the left of this image is part of an Inca wall and a fine double jamb Inca doorway, the sort of which were used on the most important buildings and palaces. Also note the doorway is at a slight angle; most Inca doorways were trapezoid in shape rather than rectangular which made them stronger and more resistant to earthquakes.
