Description
A view of the Forte da Insua castle on an island in the Atlantic Ocean just offshore from the estuary of the River Minho near Caminha in northern Portugal. The island was originally settled by Franciscan monks, who built the small Santa Maria da Insua monastery there in the 14th century. The castle was built during the 17th century along with many others along the northern coast of Portugal. The Portuguese revolution of 1640 led to Portuguese Restoration War between Portugal and Spain and also involved other European powers. The War ended with the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668, which brought a formal end to the Iberian Union and led to the restoration of Portuguese independence. Caminha has long been an important town in an important strategic location on the River Minho estuary. Today the river forms the border between Portugal and Galicia in Spain (the hills on the left are in Spain).

Beautiful place and capture! I must visit northern Portugal someday!
James Brunker replied:
Plenty to see up there! Rest of country looks superb too, will hopefully get chance to explore more one day
