Description
The James's or Puna flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi) is the smallest of the three flamingo species found in the high Andes. It is named after Harry Berkley James who sponsored the expedition that first collected specimens. It is a listed endangered species and was actually thought to be extinct until a colony was rediscovered in 1956. It is found on high altitude saline lakes in Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina; the largest breeding colonies are at Laguna Colorada in southwest Bolivia. This image was taken at Laguna Hedionda, another good place to see them, in the same region of Bolivia.
