Description
The James's or Puna flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi) is one of three flamingo species found in the high Andes and arguably the most beautiful. It is named after Harry Berkley James who sponsored the expedition that first collected specimens. It is a listed endangered species and was actually thought to be extinct until a colony was rediscovered in 1956. It is found on high altitude saline lakes in Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina; the largest breeding colonies are at Laguna Colorada in southern Bolivia. These lakes are often affected by mining as they contain several rare minerals, particularly borax. It is pinker than other flamingo species and has bright red legs and feet.
