Description
A detail of the mosaics on the tympanum above the main entrance of Westminster Cathedral in London, UK. The cathedral is the largest Catholic church in the UK and the mother church of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales. It is also the seat of the Archbishop of Westminster.
The cathedral was designed by John Francis Bentley in a neo-Byzantine style and completed in 1903. Its mosaics were added later, the first between 1912 and 1916, others after 1950. This mosaic, "Christ Enthroned", above the entrance to the cathedral depicts Jesus Christ as the Christ Pantocrator (usually translated as "Almighty" or "all-powerful") holding the Book of Life and flanked by the Virgin Mary and St Joseph (who is holding a lily flower).
