Description
A Kapac Chunchu dance group on one of several mountain trails above the Sanctuary of the Lord of Qoyllur Riti in the high Andes in Peru's Cusco region. The Qoyllur Riti (which means Snow Star in the Quechua language) festival is one of the largest in Peru. During the event tens of thousands of people and dance groups make a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary, a church located in a valley at 4700m / approx 15,500ft at the foot of the sacred Sinak'ara mountain. Kapac Chunchu dancers represent native warriors from the Qosnipata jungle who have sworn loyalty to a Virgin or saint, it is their duty to protect them during the festival. The festival was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List in 2011.
