Description
Houses sprawl up a steep hillside in the Tacagua district in the suburbs of Bolivia's administrative capital La Paz, with peaks of the Cordillera Real range in the background. A recent winter snowfall still lies on the plains of the high altiplano. The main peaks are Mt Huayna Potosi (L, 6088m / 19,975ft) and Chacaltaya (R, 5395m / 17,700ft). Few cities are located in such challenging geographical terrain as La Paz. The centre is at an altitude around 3650m / 11,975 ft in a huge valley below the Andes mountains; there is an altitude difference of nearly 1000m / 3,300ft between the upper and lower parts of the city!
