Description
A detail of one of the turrets / bartizans of the Forte de Ancora / Forte da Lagarteira castle in Vila Praia de Ancora in northern Portugal. The castle is one of many that were built along the northern coast of Portugal during the mid and late17th century. The Portuguese revolution of 1640 led to Portuguese Restoration War between Portugal and Spain and also involved other European powers. The War ended with the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668, which brought a formal end to the Iberian Union and led to the restoration of Portuguese independence. I love the bright yellows and oranges of the lichens against the grey, granite stone, it really adds a great dash of colour against the blue sky!
The Ministerio da Marinha / Ministry of the Navy have owned the fort since 1939 and have a small office inside, hence the mast in the background that is in the centre of the structure.
