Description
Laguna Verde (or Green Lagoon) is one of the most spectacular of the mineral lakes in southwestern Bolivia. The lake is one of the highlights of the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve (Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Abaroa in Spanish, often referred to locally by its Spanish acronym REA). Its colour is due to an unusually high concentration of arsenic and changes according to the time of day and wind conditions; the concentrations also means the lake stays liquid even at temperatures as low as -35C. The perfectly conical Licancabur volcano (5915m / 19,410ft) in the background sits in the extreme southwest corner of Bolivia on the border with Chile.
