Description
An Aymara man and his llama wait for the judges' verdict in a llama beauty contest at a festival in Orinoca, Oruro Department, Bolivia. Llamas are, along with alpacas, one of South America's domestic camelids and closely related to camels. They are common throughout the Andes (herds can be huge) and bred for their meat and wool; in the past they were an important means of transport in rural areas. Livestock fairs and competition are often held at village festivals, winning brings considerable prestige to the owner and his herd. The colourful wooly “earrings†are to identify which family or community the animals belong to.
