Description
Llamas (Lama glama) are one of South America's 2 domestic camelids (the alpaca is the other) and closely related to camels. They are common throughout the Andes and bred mainly for their fine, soft wool. In high altitude regions where agriculture is difficult camelids are often the mainstay of the rural economy and herds can be huge. Their facial expressions and "hairstyles" are often cute and comical! The colourful wooly ear tags (called t'ikas) are to identify which family or community the animals belong to.
