Description
Two llamas (Lama glama) on a hillside near the 6071m /19,918ft Guallatiri volcano in northern Chile. They are one of South America's 2 domestic camelids and closely related to camels, in high altitude regions where agriculture is difficult are often the mainstay of the rural economy. Guallatiri is one of the most active volcanos in northern Chile. Fumaroles can frequently been seen emitting smoke from near its summit and on the southern flank where there are several vents. It's last confirmed eruption was in 1960, although it seems likely it erupted in 1985 and there was increased fumarole activity in 2015. This area is part of the Las Vicunas National Reserve and also the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981.
