Description
Yareta / Llareta (Azorella compacta) plants grow on a rocky hillside in the Las Vicunas National Reserve in northern Chile. They are endangered and only found in the high altitude deserts of the central Andes. Due to the cold, dry climate they are very slow growing, at a rate of up to 1cm / year. In the background is the Guallatiri volcano (6071m /19,918ft), one of the most active volcanos in northern Chile. This area is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981.
