Description
A stormy sunset loom over the remote altiplano grasslands and a rustic church in Sajama National Park, Bolivia. These quaint churches (this one is above Lagunas village) are typical of the altiplano regions of western Bolivia and northern Chile. Research has shown many of them were built on sites sacred to the indigenous people to encourage them to convert to Catholicism. The ragged formations below the cloud base are called virga; rain or hail that evaporates before it reaches the ground. It is a phenomenon that is fairly common in deserts and other dry and / or high altitude regions which generate strong thermals and updrafts.
