Description
A lone black llama stands out against the snow covered altiplano in Bolivia's Sajama National Park in the far west of the country. These snowfalls during the winter dryer season are the result of cold fronts and transform the altiplano grasslands into a harsh yet strangely beautiful landscapes, ideal for minimalist and black and white images. Heavy falls can cut remote areas off for days or more and be a real hardship for the local people and their livestock, which struggle to find grazing under the snow. Llamas are one of South America's 2 domestic camelids and closely related to camels. They are common throughout the Andes and in high altitude regions such as this where agriculture is difficult are often the mainstay of the rural economy.
