Description
A stone door in the shape of a horseshoe set into a wall made of the local granite stone in the small village of Vila Praia de Ancora in Minho Province in northern Portugal. Horseshoes have long been considered lucky, quite possibly because they used to be made of iron which was believed to ward off evil spirits, hence the tradition of nailing an iron horseshoe to a door. There is considerable variation in the traditions.
