Description
This old car license plate and horseshoe over the door of an abandoned wooden shack caught my eye while wandering around Pisagua in northern Chile. Pisagua was an important nitrate exporting port in the 19th and first part of the 20th century. It is now mostly abandoned though it still supports a small fishing community. Many grand, empty buildings survive from days when it was much more prosperous.
Horseshoes have long been considered lucky, quite possibly because they used to be made of iron which was believed to ward off evil spirits, hence the tradition of nailing an iron horseshoe to a door. There is considerable variation in the traditions. In some countries the horseshoe is hung on a door with the two ends pointing up so good luck will occur or so the luck does not fall out. In others the horseshoe is hung points down so the luck pours onto a person standing under it. Hopefully the latter was true here.....!
