Description
Every July the sleepy village of San Ignacio de Moxos in the Bolivian lowlands bursts into life for several days for the festival known as Ichapekene Piesta to celebrate the anniversary of its founding and its patron saint, San Ignacio. The village was founded by the Jesuits on 31 July 1689 and still preserves much of its traditional culture; these Machetero dancers with their spectacular macaw feather headdresses are particularly famous. The festival was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List in December 2012.
