Arguably the most famous archaeological site in South America, the Inca city of Machu Picchu sits high on a ridge above the Urubamba River not far from Cusco. The steep peak behind the site is called Huayna Picchu. Probably built during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century, it was never found by the Spanish and remained unknown to the outside world until the arrival of the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Llamas were indispensible to the development of civilisation in the Andes. Domesticated several thousand years ago from a now extinct species, they were and still are widely used for transport, wool and meat. The animals at Machu Picchu have a far more comfortable existence!

I really like this picture… it is such a wonderful juxtaposition. On the one side of the photo there is breath taking and dramatic scenery with rocky stone controlled and solid cubic structures,,, and Misty peaks, and then on the side there are soft llamas. … one who is reckless and lying in the road without a care in the world, and the other who is thinking about the grass on the extreme edge of the cliff top. Fabulous.
James Brunker replied:
Thank you Emma! The brown llama is quite safe you'll be pleased to know, no vehicles are allowed inside the archaeological site

Thank you Suzanne, the light was gorgeous that day and the llamas very chilled out, maybe due to being rainy season and fewer tourists pestering them!

Having just returned from here just a week ago, I had to pick this one as my favorite for that discussion thread. I had excellent early morning fog and mist (before it started to rain and everything disappeared into the fog) but those llamas were not cooperative for me!
James Brunker replied:
Hope you had a good trip Tom! Machu Picchu is beautiful in early morning mist and fog, v atmospheric and mysterious, look forward to seeing some photos soon!
