Description
Madrid's Royal Palace dates from the mid 18th century; a previous palace that burned down in 1734 had been built on the site of a 9th century castle. These days it is only used for state ceremonies, the Royal Family live in a smaller palace on the outskirts of Madrid instead. The Sabatini Gardens were added in 1933 under the Republican government. They are named after Francesco Sabatini, one of the architects who worked on the palace and who designed the stables that previously occupied the site.
