Description
The Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) is found in the oceans of South America and breeds in large colonies on the coasts of Argentina, Chile (especially in Patagonian regions in the far south) and the Falkland Islands. It is named after Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who recorded the birds in 1520 during the voyage when he became the first person to circumnavigate the Earth. They mate with the same partner each year; the male returns to same burrow used the previous year in the nesting colony and waits for his partner. Returning females are able to recognize their mates through their call, an impressive and vital ability in colonies that usually have tens or in some places hundreds of thousands of birds!
