Description
An Aymara woman pours alcohol onto an offering to Pachamama (literally "Earth Mother" or "Earth Goddess"). Pachamama has long been one of the most important deities for the indigenous people of the Andes: she is also often identified as nature and the natural environment that gives and sustains life and well being. Offerings (which are called "pagos de tierra" / "earth payments") are made throughout the year and in Bolivia and central Andean regions especially in August, after the harvests and before the planting season. People believe that after the harvest Pachamama's energy is exhausted and needs to be replenished with offerings before crop planting can begin. This image was taken at La Cumbre, the high pass across the Andes Mountains above La Paz which is a popular place for making such offerings.
