Description
People enjoy a stroll along the Ingelesen Landaka Kaia walkway near Bilbao's famous spider sculpture. The sculpture (called "Maman", the French for Mummy or Mother, in Spanish "Mama") was made in 1999 by the artist Louise Bourgeois. The original, made of steel, is in the Tate Modern in London. 6 bronze copies are on permanent display elsewhere; Bilbao's is one of these and located on the bank of the Ria de Bilbao next to the famous Guggenheim Museum. The museum was built as part of a Bilbao city regeneration project (which included revamping a lot of the waterfront area) and very quickly became a major tourist attraction.
