Description
The Milky Way's Galactic Center sets above the abandoned church at Lagunas in Sajama National Park, Bolivia. The bright star just above the tower is Antares, a giant red star that is the brightest in the constellation Scorpio. These quaint mud brick and stone churches are typical of the region; research has shown many of them were built on sites sacred to the indigenous people to encourage them to convert to Catholicism. The peaks in the background to the right of the entrance arch are the Payachatas ("twin" in Aymara) volcanos on the Chilean border; the lights on the left the small border village of Tambo Quemado.
