Description
The Milky Way rises above the belfry of Parinacota village church in Lauca National Park in the far north of Chile. The Park is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981. These quaint churches are typical of the high altiplano regions of northern Chile and western Bolivia. Research has shown many of them were built on sites sacred to the indigenous people to encourage them to convert to Catholicism. The structure on the left is a type of apacheta or cairn with a cross; variations of these are commonly located in front of the entrances of these churches.
