Description
A detail of the facade of the magnificent 16th century Casa de la Misericordia ("House of Mercy"), one of the most notable historic buildings in Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal. It is also known as the Casa das Varandas (House of Balconies) and overlooks the main square; it is attached to a church and monastery built by the same Misericordia brotherhood. The city was an important port in mediaeval times, when it was the departure point for many Portuguese explorers.

Nice one James! Pretty imposing and beautiful craftsmanship!
James Brunker replied:
Thank you Alex. If you ever get the chance to visit Viana do Castelo, the interior of the church attached to this building is amazing. Totally decorated with the blue and white painted ceramic tiles Portugal is famous for and gold leaf on the altars. Photography inside is restricted but I'm sure there are some shots online; there are other similarly ornate church interiors in the country too
