Description
A late afternoon autumn view across the Estanque Grande lake to the monument to Alfonso XII in Retiro Park / Parque del Buen Retiro in Madrid, Spain. The park is one of the largest in the city and full of monuments, woodlands, walkways and gardens. It used to belong to the Spanish royal family until the late 19th century, it then became a public park and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2021.
The Monument to Alfonso XII is one of the most impressive in the park and was designed by the architect José Grases Riera. He died in 1919, before it was inaugurated on June 6th, 1922. The central part of the monument which is topped by a statue of Alfonso XII on horseback is 30m / 100ft high, the colonnade that surrounds it is 86m / 282ft across.
