Description
A statue of the Marquis de Lafayette (full name Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier) in front of the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore. The Washington Monument was the first architectural monument planned to honor George Washington. It is 178 feet / 54m high and was completed in 1829. The Marquis de Lafayette was a French aristocrat and military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War and also the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830. . He was also a close friend of George Washington and helped write the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen with Thomas Jefferson. The church spire in the background is the gothic style United Methodist Church.
