Sajama volcano (6542m / 21,465ft) in western Bolivia is the country's highest peak and rises dramatically above the barren altiplano desert landscape. The quaint mud brick churches are typical of the region; research has shown many of them were built on sites sacred to the indigenous people to encourage them to convert to Catholicism.
